Fatima Bapumia

Fatima Bapumia is an external PhD student at the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL). Her research project is titled Movement of Medicines along the Indian Ocean in Colonial Zanzibar.
Focusing on medicines, Fatima explores different kinds of medicines that traveled along with the migrants from the Arab peninsula and the Indian sub-continent, and the manner in which they influence the medicine landscape in present-day Zanzibar.

Fatima holds a Master’s degree in Sociology and a PhD in Cultural Studies, obtained from the University of Leipzig. Her body of research comprises patterns of social interactions through religion and popular culture and ethno-racial relations in Tanzania.

Besides research interests, Fatima is a trained journalist and language coach for English as a foreign language, currently practicing as a freelancer.
