African Perspectives on Peace and Security

The African Studies Centre Leiden and the Netherlands Defence Academy are constituting parts of the Knowledge Hub Africa, which seeks to develop a research agenda on ‘African Peace and Security’. For the time period of 2026-2031, this will include a PhD project on ‘Multipolarity and Military Cooperation’, a PhD project on ‘Climate Security and the Military’, a PhD project on ‘Armed Groups and Proxy Warfare’ and a postdoc project on ‘African Actors in the Russo-Ukraine War’. In addition, the Knowledge Hub Africa will organise seminars and initiate collaborative publication projects. Recognising that the African continent is a major player in global security, the Knowledge Hub Africa aims to highlight the agency of governmental organisations, non-state armed groups, and citizens in matters of war and peace. To this end, the hub will work closely together with African academic partners, including Stellenbosch University and the National Defence University-Kenya.
