During his four-month fellowship at the ASC, Prof. Pat McAllister from the Department of Sociology at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch was able to consolidate and extend the work he had been engaged in as part of the ASC's DARE research programme. He incorporated research results derived from earlier fieldwork and wrote a paper entitled 'Subsistence Production or "Scratching about in the Soil"? Agricultural Yields in Transkei' which deals with the nature and value of subsistence cultivation in Willowvale District, Transkei, and with the policy implications of the findings. The themes with which he was concerned during his stay, namely Transkei agriculture, cooperative work, beer-drinking and rural identity form the subject matter of a longer manuscript entitled 'Building the Homestead: Labour and Beer in the Transkei, South Africa'.
