Marjolein de Leeuw

Marjolein has a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Amsterdam for which she wrote a thesis on Dutch diplomatic communication about the negotiations of landing rights for the KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines with the Tanganyika/Tanzanian government in the 1960s/1970s. Marjolein went on to do the Research Master African Studies at Leiden University. She recently graduated (2018) by finishing her thesis, entitled ‘A history of professional pilots in Tanzania, 1917-2017’, which focuses on the changing (labour) conditions of (Tanzanian) pilots in Tanzania and on how different industry stakeholders have dealt with shifting realities in local and global aviation. During her Research Master, Marjolein also did a six-months internship at the Netherlands embassy in Dar es Salaam.

At the ASCL, Marjolein is organizing a two-day conference on the future of African cities, to be held in Leiden on 24-25 January 2019. She is also working part-time at the secretariat.
