The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has gone through a decade of significant economic change and political contestation since 2004. The ruling EPRDF party has redefined the country as a 'developmental state' and has tried to increase its presence on the African and world stage. Preceded by a new Introduction casting a broader perspective on some underlying trends, this monograph by Jon Abbink presents a chronology for 2004 to 2016, compiling the chapters on Ethiopia previously published in the Africa Yearbook.

What is the relevance and role of frugal innovation within the Sustainable Development Goals? The Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa (CFIA) organizes an international conference in Leiden on 7 and 8 November discovering answers to this question. The Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa is part of the strategic alliance between Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

On 9 October the African Studies Centre Leiden will be presenting its new research programme for 2018-2023 and introducing its new professors in African Studies. Professors Jan Abbink and Rijk van Dijk, who previously held chairs at other universities, will be taking up their chairs in Leiden. Jan-Bart Gewald, new director of the ASCL, and Mirjam de Bruijn, Chair LeidenASA, will give presentations. Marleen Dekker will be giving her inaugural lecture as new Professor of Inclusive Development in Africa.
