Infosheet: Algeria at 60

On the occasion of the Africa 2020 year, the ASCL created Infosheets about the countries that became independent in 1960. We have continued this series with countries that became independent in subsequent years. From ca. 1830 onwards Algeria was a French colony. During the 1950s and early 1960s a bloody war of independence took place, ending with the political independence of Algeria as a republic in 1962. Read about the country's recent history, demographic and social-economic developments, urbanisation, agricultural developments, and regional inequality.

This is ASC Infosheet 55. Read the other Infosheets.
