CANCELLED: Afrikadag 2020 with ASCL workshop 'What animals can teach us about African Studies'

Because of the government measures relating to the corona outbreak, the Afrikadag that was scheduled for 27 June, has been cancelled.

At the annual Afrikadag organized by the Foundation Max van der Stoel, the African Studies Centre Leiden will be present with an ASCL book stand at the information market and with a workshop entitled 'What animals can teach us about African Studies'. Speakers: Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald and Dr Harry Wels.

In sync with the African Studies Centre Leiden's launch of its Collaborative Research Group 'Trans-species perspectives on African Studies', various Africanist colleagues in South Africa explore theoretical and methodological avenues to further develop this paradigm, where shared sentience between life forms and species, human and non-human, is taken as the common denominator. In this seminar we want to tell more about two fascinating South African research projects exploring sentience and sense making beyond humans:Michael Glover's PhD on a cattle-centered perspective on southern African history and Dr. William Ellis' research on plants in the Cape Town area.
