African Studies: Issues and Trends

The First European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) was organized by AEGIS (Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies) at the School of Oriental and African Studies and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London in July 2005. This long-awaited conference was a great success. This year, the Dutch African Studies Centre is hosting its sequel, the Second European Conference on African Studies, from 11-14 July 2007 in Leiden.

ECAS 2 has as its theme “African Alternatives: Initiative and Creativity beyond Current Constraints”. Participants in some 90 panels will consider the nature of current constraints (internal and external) to Africa’s development, coping strategies implemented in all sectors of society, and diverse initiatives offering alternatives to the prevailing paradigms. The conference will be preceded by a meeting of European Africana librarians.

AEGIS Conference logoThe gathering of a large number of European Africanists in Leiden was seen by the Library, Documentation and Information Department of the ASC as a good opportunity to give special attention to publications on African Studies in our collection. These are presented here in the form of a Web Dossier. The dossier contains a selection of recent titles - both books and articles - from the library’s online catalogue, as well as annotated links to several online lists of African Studies journals and relevant websites. Each title is linked directly to the corresponding record in our online catalogue, which provides abstracts and lending information. Titles are arranged in two sections, followed by selected web resources:

  1. African Studies: General Issues
  2. African Studies: Country Perspectives
  3. Selected web resources
