Vacancy: Student assistant

For the Stephen Ellis Chair for the Governance of Finance and Integrity in Africa, Professor Dr. C. U. Uche, the African Studies Centre Leiden is looking for a

student assistant (four hours a week).

Starting date: September / October 2021
Duration: for 9-10 months

Job description
The duties of the assistant will be wide-ranging, including online research and data gathering, questionnaire distribution and collation, library search, data analysis, and taking minutes during meetings. The assistant will also be involved in preparing lecture slides and providing ICT support during lectures. 

Skills/qualifications
The ideal candidate should be a second or third-year Honours student with excellent academic grades and a genuine interest in Africa. The candidate should also have very good computer, interpersonal and analytical skills. Finally, the student should have a good understanding of basic economics and statistics.

Requirements

  • Registered as a University student in the Netherlands during the term of the appointment 
  • Excellent oral and written command of English and Dutch
  • Knowledge of Microsoft computer programmes (minimum Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint) and being able to draw basic graphs
  • Being able to work independently; discreet; stress resistant

About the ASCL
The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. In addition, collecting and disseminating knowledge about Africa is an important task. The ASCL does this, among other things, by publishing books and articles and organising seminars and conferences. The ASCL was founded in 1947 and has approx. 50 employees. It has an extensive library that is open to the general public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.

Salary range from € 2,110.- to € 2,462.- gross per month on a full time basis in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%).
