The Truth & Reconciliation Commission in South Africa

Seminar date:
27 November 1998

* Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, Centre for African Studies, Cape Town: "The TRC and justice".
* Prof. H. von der Dunk, historian: "Coming to terms with the past: a comparison between South Africa and The Netherlands".
* Antjie Krog, South African writer and poet: "The TRC and national unity".

On October 29, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will present its final report. For two years, thousands of victims as well as perpetrators, bore testimonies to the TRC. According to many, the work of the TRC is of vital importance for the future of a new South Africa, for it is said that there can be no new South Africa without reconciliation, no reconciliation without forgiveness, and no forgiveness without truth. As the TRC nears the completion of its task, it is time to assess two years of painful and shocking statements.
Kairos organises this seminar in co-operation with the African Studies Centre (ASC), with NiZA (Nederlands Instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika), NZAV (de Nederlandse Zuid-Afrikaanse Vereniging) and SIM (Studie- en Informatiecentrum Mensenrechten).

Chair:   Prof. P. Baehr.
