Student Assistant

In the context of his Chair in the study of Religion in Contemporary Africa and its Diaspora, Professor Rijk van Dijk is looking for a

Student assistant (four hours a week)

Start date: February 2023

Duration: for 60 hours, for the period February to June 2023

Job description

The duties of the assistant will be wide-ranging and include:

- assisting in the organisation of a workshop on the theme of ‘Contestations of Policing Religion in Africa’ (working title) to be held in June 2023

- online research and data gathering on the theme of the workshop

- identification of, and communication with, selected speakers

- library search and the collection of literature on topics relevant to the Chair and to the workshop

- taking minutes during the workshop meetings

Skills/qualifications

The ideal candidate should be a master’s student with excellent academic grades and a genuine interest in Africa. The candidate should also have good interpersonal, communication and writing skills. Finally, the student should have a reasonable understanding of the anthropology of religion in Africa.

Requirements

  • Registered as a university student in the Netherlands during the term of the appointment 
  • Excellent oral and written command of English and Dutch
  • An ability to work independently, with discretion, and be stress resistant
  • The student should be available for an average of 4 working hours per week

About the ASCL

The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. In addition, collecting and disseminating knowledge and information about Africa is an important task. The ASCL does this by, among other things, publishing books and articles and organising seminars and conferences. The ASCL was founded in 1947 and has approx. 50 employees. It has an extensive library that is open to the general public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.

A varied job in an informal, academic environment. The phase of the programme in which the student is, is decisive for determining the salary (min. 2,402 euros – max. 2,611 euros on a full-time basis). The appointment is for the duration of 60 hours in the period February to June 2023.
