Refugees in Africa: challenges of studying and interacting with forcibly displaced people.

Seminar date:
20 April 1999

* Francis Deng, Brookings Institution Washington D.C.: "Dealing with displaced people in war situations".
* David Turton, Director of Refugees Studies Program, Oxford University: "Do we need refugee studies: some conceptual and methodological issues in the study of refugees and forced migrants".

Organised in cooperation with the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague.

In the wake of Africa's ecological crises and of conflict situations of the last few decades, the continent has yielded a very high number of refugees and forced migrants. In this seminar, two major international experts on refugee movements and refugee crises in Africa will discuss critical issues not only in policies and practice of dealing with actual refugee problems, but also in the representations and concepts used in the study of forcibly displaced people.
