Looking back on the Master's Open Day 2026

The Master African Studies was showcased during the university’s Master’s Open Day on 6 February 2026. The session was well-attended by interested Bachelor students and their families. Karin Nijenhuis (chair of the programme) first explained the set-up of the programme, career prospects, and admission requirements. Then Petros Soldatos (current student) shared his experiences on the study programme and gave prospect students some clear advice ('Open up your mind!'). Lastly, alumna Robin van Andel presented her project called 'Children as Business', based on research she conducted with street children in Uganda’s capital Kampala. There was ample room for questions and exchange during the session and the information market afterwards.

Set-up of the programme
The Master African Studies is a one-year multidisciplinary programme in the humanities and social sciences, that offers students the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about Africa from various cross-cutting thematic angles. Jewel in the crown is the so-called embedded research project in Africa or with an Africa-related organisation elsewhere, in which the student carries out an individual research project for 10 weeks while being hosted by an organisation. The programme starts every year in September.
