Lifting the Debt Burden. Consequences for Africa

Seminar date:
16 December 1999

* Ted van Hees, Eurodad.
* Henk Meilink, African Studies Centre.
* Roland Martin, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, DMO/AS.

In recent years several organisations have been fighting for the elimination of Africa's international debts. Their pleas are now been taken over by the more powerful in this world. Last March President Clinton urged the international community to release Africa of its debt burden and the G7 have come up with similar proposals. This seminar focuses on the possible consequences of a write-off. Will this provide new possibilities for economic development or are expectations too high?
