The war in Sudan, driven by internal power struggles and sustained by foreign interests, has escalated into the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis. At a recent London conference, €800 million in aid was pledged and a ceasefire called for, though countries like Russia and the UAE continue to fuel the conflict. Professor Jan Abbink highlights that while international actors worsen the situation, the war’s roots are primarily domestic. He also warns of risks posed by a future Russian Red Sea naval base and notes that, although both sides committed war crimes, the West seems to cautiously back the Sudanese government army to avoid association with the RSF.
