African people in Britain

Seminar date:
24 September 1998

* Prof. Dr. D. Killingray, London: "Peoples of African origin and descent in Britain in the 20th century".

Black people of African origin have been part of the British population since the 16th century. This paper surveys the history and experience of this small but visible minority and looks at some significant questions about the size, composition, distribution, gender, status and social class of the black population, especially in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Further questions looked at will be on what happened to the black population in the 19th and 20th century (the extent of racial discrimination, elite led black political organisations which opposed the 'colour bar'). The paper will conclude with a brief look at the struggle for equal rights since 1950 by the black British and immigrant population.
Professsor David Killingray has a chair of Modern History at Goldsmiths College London. He has written books and articles on African, Caribbean, Imperial, and English local history.
