The ASCL proudly presents its new Research Programme for 2025-2029: African Trajectories: Past Dependencies and New Directions. Building on its former programme Strident Africa, the new research agenda extends the recognition of Africa’s pivotal role in world affairs.

The visibility of violence in South African news media is painfully selective, she writes. 

In a new blog, Lidewyde Berckmoes reflects on Rwanda three decades after the genocide against the Tutsi. She explores the entanglements of peace and war in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, asking: does peace demand war elsewhere, and can hope for future generations grow from past wounds?

On 22 September, the Executive Board of Leiden University paid a visit to the African Studies Centre Leiden, during which staff from the ASCL and the African Library presented their research, teaching, societal and acquisition activities. 

The African Studies Centre Leiden is looking for an enthusiastic Communications Officer to organise events and help share our research, education, and publications with the world. You will be part of a dynamic and internationally oriented research institute.

During the spring of 2025 Gerard van de Bruinhorst visited the capitals of The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The trip resulted in the acquisition of more than 1000 physical books and contextual items in print and digital, both from the five visited countries and the wider West African region.
