Hanza Diman

Hanza Diman is currently a Research Assistant with a teaching assignment at the Chair of Refugee, Migration and Mobility Studies at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. His ongoing postdoctoral research explores compact cassettes as cultural artefacts within Benin-Ivorian migration dynamics between 1970 and 2000.

With a disciplinary background in German literature (University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin) and a Master’s in African Cultures and Societies with a focus on African History (University of Bayreuth). The Master's thesis addresses the causes of military coups d'état and is currently under review for publication as a monograph. He completed his PhD with summa cum laude in 2021 at the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS). His dissertation addressed the history of domestic fuelwood energy in Lomé (Togo) and was supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and BIGSAS.

His academic and civic commitments include conducting field research in Benin, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as in Berlin and Aix-en-Provence, coordinating cultural and educational projects, and active membership in several academic and civil society networks. In 2022, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany for his educational engagement. He is also a member of the NFDI4Memory Research Ethics Committee, the Oral History Society (UK), and other scholarly associations.
