Pieter van der Houwen

Pieter van der Houwen (MA, MSc) is a photographer/filmmaker who has worked extensively on the African continent. After twenty years of working in the field he completed a Masters degree from The University of Glasgow. His key research focused on representations of Africa in Western media. This provided him with an advanced understanding of the interplay between politics, media and public opinion, adding a welcome depth to his visual practice. Currently he is working on the publication 'The Complicit Camera', which explores the impact of photography on our understanding and perception of Africa. He has a specific interest in the contemporary African Diaspora, resulting in 'African Tabliod', a publication that documents various African diasporic communities. He is also writer and director of The Africa-China Connection, a 50 minute documentary portraying the African community in Guangzhou, China ( Tegenlicht / Backlight VPRO).
