Julia Foudraine

Julia obtained a Bachelor’s degree in History, with a specialization in African History and Postcolonial Studies, at the University of Utrecht within three years. Her thesis was titled ‘Een totaal beschaafde oorlog. De Tweede Anglo-Boerenoorlog in Zuid-Afrika als 'the last of the gentlemen's wars' en een 'total war'’, in which she elaborated on the contradictions of the military character of the Second Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902).

She started with the Research Master in September 2012 and has done fieldwork in South Africa concerning the history of the labour union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). AMCU is worldwide known for its involvement in a violent strike in August 2012, the so-called ‘Marikana Massacre’.
