Javier López Piñón

As a stage-director of opera, I got interested in theatre life in West Africa. As a teacher at Dutch National Opera Academy as well as the Amsterdam Theatre School, I stimulate initiatives in (francophone mainly) West Africa to offer formal training in the performing arts for aspiring professionals.

My main focus is Bénin (where a Ba in theatre arts has been established at the Ecole Internationale de Théatre du Bénin, I have been involved from its very beginning), Togo (where I collaborate with colleagues on the creation of a professional network  to facilitate training possibilities) and Ivory Coast, where I work with the INSAAC and the newly established Ecole Nationale de Theatre et Danse. My future ambition is to establish a music-theatre centre in Guinée-Conakry. in 2017 I acquired my MA degree with my thesis Borrowers and Lenders: Exploring Contemporary Intercultural Theatre in Francophone west-Africa. Currently I'm preparing a PhD (probably Practice as Research) on amalgamating contemporary theatre with performance traditions in northern Togo.
