Femke van Zeijl

Femke van Zeijl is a Dutch writer and freelance journalist based in Lagos, Nigeria. She is also an African Studies alumna of Leiden University. Her master’s thesis 'The Curious Case of Casa do Fernandez: Challenges of Heritage Management in Nigeria' was nominated for the Volkskrant-IISG Thesis Award 2021. She writes for Dutch and international media such as Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, New York Times and Al Jazeera, and makes radio and TV documentaries. She previously wrote two non-fiction books: 'A Night in a Mortar' and 'Gin-Tonic & Cholera', and the novel 'King of the Barracas'. Her fourth book 'DIY-Society: Life in Lagos' was published in 2022.
