Benson A. Mulemi

Dr. Benson Mulemi is an Associate Professor in Medical Anthropology at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi, Kenya.  He serves as an Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor; Research, Innovation and Partnership. He also works as Research Coordinator and Acting Director in the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Publication. Benson Mulemi holds a PhD degree from the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Medical Anthropology Unit, in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He also has experience in Political anthropology, applied anthropology in development studies and culture and peace studies. He has served as a resource person in multidisciplinary research and academic contexts of the study of African realities.

Benson Mulemi has worked on various projects as a research fellow, lecturer/visiting lecturer, supervisor, internal/external examiner, at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa; Gulu University; Uganda,  Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies ( University of Nairobi), Institute of Tropical Medicine & Infectious Diseases (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology, Kenya Medical Research Institute in Nairobi), Institute for Peace Studies and International Relations (Hekima College), Christ the Teacher Institute for Education ( Tangaza college), Mission Studies department in the Theological Centre for Religious (Tangaza), Institute of Social Ministry ( Tangaza), the Jesuit School of Theology ( Hekima), Department of Anthropology and Sociology (Maseno University), International Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (University of Amsterdam), the Medical Anthropology Unit ( Amsterdam Masters in Medical Anthropology, University of Amsterdam), Tom Mboya University College, Kenya. He worked as field and graduate assistant at the programme at Maryknoll Tangaza college in Nairobi.

Benson Mulemi was awarded the British Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences visiting scholar grant, and Visiting Research Fellow supported by A.G. Leventis Foundation, at the Centre of African Studies and Wolfson College; Cambridge University, UK; in 2011 and 2014/15 respectively. He has convened various panels in international conferences such as the European Conference on African Studies and International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences’ (IUAES) Inter-Congress.

Research interests: Hospital ethnography, culture and technology, Culture, disability and Society, Ethnographies of global health; Health care and livelihood in Eastern Africa; Ethnography of human albinism and being albino in Eastern Africa.
