Abstract

The origins of this collective volume lie in a series of papers presented at the symposium on land management and sustainable development in rural and urban environments of the Third World, held at the 1996 International Geographical Congress in The Hague, The Netherlands. Contributions with a specific Africa focus: Leo de Haan (reassessment of findings from an interdisciplinary research project on land management and pastoralism in Benin); Haakon Lein (traditional versus modern water management systems in Pangani river basin, Tanzania); Hein de Haas (socioeconomic transformations and oasis agriculture in southern Morocco); Kazunobu Ikeya (local land management and conflicts between Somali and Orma pastoralists in northeastern Kenya)
