Abstract

This report is the outcome of an action programme on land tenure in the Sahel, prepared by the CILSS (Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel) and the Club du Sahel in April 1990 in Ouagadougou, with the collaboration of the Land Tenure Center of Madison, Wisconsin. Actions were undertaken in Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and the Gambia. The report offers a regional synopsis, paying attention to land tenure and natural resource management in the Sahel countries, the major land tenure conflicts in the region, local land tenure practices and institutions, laws and regulations on land tenure and current reforms, and possible solutions and policy options
