logo SlideShareSlideShare: Share your Presentations

SlideShare is a website that allows you to share presentations, documents and pdfs. For example, a PowerPoint presentation can easily and quickly be put online and made available to students, colleagues or a group of selected individuals, or for private use. It lets you put all your presentations on one site for viewing or downloading.

SlideShare can be used to:

• transfer a presentation to selected individuals or a group if your PowerPoint is too big to be sent as an email attachment

• make your presentation available online

• place all your presentations on one site

• find presentations on a specific topic

• request all the presentations from a particular conference or symposium

• link your presentations or embed them in a website or blog

• and much more ...

Uploading and tagging

You first need to create an account. In addition to PowerPoint presentations, other documents can also be uploaded (see below). If a presentation has key words (so-called tags), SlideShare can find any related publications by others. It also acts as a kind of portfolio as it includes any other documents you have uploaded to SlideShare. The contents of SlideShare are indexed by Google and your presentation will be found by this search engine.

Linking and embedding

With a reference, for example from a website or your personal homepage, you offer users the chance to view your presentation on SlideShare, online and full-screen. Special software, such as MS PowerPoint, is no longer necessary. SlideShare converts documents during the upload process to a format that can be viewed in any browser. This could be useful if you have to give a presentation outside your office as a back-up will always be available. It is possible to embed your presentations and documents in the interface of your personal homepage, website, blog, LinkedIn or Facebook page. This way a user does not have to leave your page to view your presentation.

Slidecasting

Slidecasting is a new multimedia format in SlideShare that allows you to play a PowerPoint presentation synchronized with an audio file. To create a slidecast, you need to upload slides to SlideShare. Your audio file, however, can be uploaded or hosted anywhere on the web. Link the slides and audio together using the SlideShare synchronization tool. Every time you play the slidecast, the audio is streamed from its location and plays with the slides.

See, for example, the slidecast on the African Studies Thesaurus.
