Julia Martínez

Julia Martínez is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia and an historian of labour and migration who completed her doctorate in 2000. As an Australian Research Council Future Fellow  (2013-2017) she is undertaking a four-year project on the history of "trafficking", exploring Asian and indigenous women's mobility in Australia and Southeast Asia. Her publications include histories of colonial labour for domestic service and the pearl-shell industry. She focuses on Indonesian, Chinese, Filipino and Japanese labour migration in colonial Southeast Asia and Australia. During her IIAS-ASC fellowship she plans to extend her research to include indentured  Chinese labour in French Congo, a project she began some years ago while conducting research in the French archives.
