Jacob Koopman

Jacob Koopman, MD PhD, works at the Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and at the Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing, both in Leiden, the Netherlands. He investigates the rate and the way of aging in a traditional African population in northern Ghana, where infectious diseases are omnipresent, but a sedentary lifestyle is uncommon. He has studied Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the LUMC and graduated in 2012. During his studies, he participated in fieldwork in rural northern Ghana in 2009 and 2010. He gathered data on survival and cardiovascular health among older people in this area. He works on aging, cardiovascular health, fertility patterns, and the epidemiological transition of this area. He has published a doctorate thesis on these subjects under the supervision of dr. David van Bodegom and prof.dr. Rudi Westendorp. In addition, he set up the Professor Gbas Foundation to support the medical training of deprived students from northern Ghana (see www.profgbas.nl).
