Gessesse Dessie

Currently: Research Fellow at United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa Accra, Ghana

Dr. Gessesse holds BSc Forestry Management, M.Sc Forest Survey and Ph.D Physical Geography from Swedish University of agricultural Sciences (SLU) Sweden, International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth sciences (ITC) the Netherlands and Stockholm University (SU) Sweden respectively. His areas of expertise lie in the human-environment interactions aspects of natural resources management.
From 2007-2012 Dr. Gessesse was assistant professor at Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources in Ethiopia (WGCFNR). He had joined WGCFNR in 1989 as an assistant lecturer.
His previous positions at WGCFNR include Coordinator of post graduate climate change programme (2011-2012), Dean Faculty of Natural Resources (2007-2009), Head Office of Research, Publication and Extension (1997-2000), Head department of Forest Management (1991-1994). He has also undertaken consultancies for FAO’s East African Eucalyptus tree debate and ANAFE’s revitalizing forestry education in Africa initiative.  He was a research fellow at Nordic Africa Institute (2010) Uppsala Sweden, and African Studies Centre (2012) Leiden the Netherlands
Dr. Gessesse has authored or co-authored referred journal articles, working papers and curricula documents at undergraduate and graduate level.  His research interest encompasses social-ecological systems with particular emphases to landscape dynamics of Ethiopia.
