On 1 May 2010 Prof. dr. Ton Dietz became Director of the African Studies Centre and is also Professor in the Study of African Development at Leiden University.

His inaugural lecture at Leiden University ("Silverlining Africa") was held on 14 Jan. 2011.

Ton Dietz has been Professor in Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam since 1995. In 2008 and 2009 he was scientific director of AMIDSt, Amsterdam research institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies. From 2002 until 2007 he was Professor of Social Sciences, Utrecht University and scientific director of CERES, Research School for Resource Studies for Development. Between 1998 and 2008 Ton Dietz was Professor in Human Geography, Dept. of Geography, Planning, and International Development Studies, University of Amsterdam. From 1995 and 1998 he was a Professor in Rural Environmental Geography of Tropics and Subtropics; Dept.of Human Geography, University of Amsterdam.
