Shirley Brooks

Shirley Brooks is a senior lecturer in human geography at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban (formerly the University of Natal). An historical geographer by training, Shirley obtained her doctorate at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 2001. Her thesis provides a cultural history of two state game reserves in Zululand, the Hluhluwe and Umfolozi parks. It is grounded in the social and political history of KwaZulu-Natal and its contested geographies. While at the African Studies Centre, she will be working to turn this thesis into a book to be published by Brill Academic Press as part of the African Studies series edited by the African Studies Centre.
