Chen Yulai

Dr. Chen Yulai is a research fellow at the Institute of West Asian and African Studies (IWAAS) and the Deputy Director of the Centre of Southern African Studies (CASS) in Beijing.

At the African Studies Centre he is part of the theme group Conflict, Conciliation and Control in Africa. His research subject is: EU's Aid to Africa: Practice and Effects. His workplan is as follows:
1. To collect documents, research reports and other information concerning the EU's policies of support to African countries' economic and social development.

2. Talks with scholars at the ASC and from other institutions of African research on:
- the assessment of the aims, mechanism and impacts of EU's assistance to African countries since their independence, and the EU's role in the development of African countries in the new century
- EU's special relations with South Africa and Southern Africa, during and after the apartheid era, assistance to Southern African regional development projects and their effects
- Africa's place in the EU's strategic consideration of establishing itself as a world power in the process of
globalisation

3. To visit the EU headquarters in Brussels and to interview relevant officials in charge of foreign aid polities, particularly of aid to Africa, and to discuss with them on EU's aid programmes to Africa in the coming decade and future relations between the EU and Africa.
