Carolien Jacobs

Carolien Jacobs is Assistant Professor at the Van Vollenhoven Institute. She has a background in International Development (MSc, Wageningen University) and in Legal Anthropology (PhD Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology/Wageningen University). She is interested in interdisciplinary research. Her research interests are in the fields of law, governance and international development, especially in Africa and in conflict-affected countries.

Carolien acquired most of her research experience in Africa, where she has worked on the role of religion in disputes and dispute resolution (Mozambique), and on an evaluation of the Dutch development aid (DRC), in relation to capacity building of Congolese NGOs and to civil society development. At present, she investigates justice and security concerns of internally displaced persons in the east of the DRC.

While at the ASCL as a LeidenASA research fellow, Carolien Jacobs will spend her time on transforming the findings of her research on justice for displaced people in DRC  into a book. She will also use her time for developing a funding proposal to further explore this topic in different regions in Africa.
