Wen er maar aan! Migratie en ontwikkeling: een ongemakkelijke boodschap

This article is in Dutch. Afrika is een mobiel continent: mensen zijn on the move. Daarnaast groeit Afrika sinds het begin van dit millennium economisch en sociaal snel. Welk verband is er met de internationale migratie? In dit artikel in Geografie nemen Prof. Ton Dietz, Afrika-Studiecentrum Leiden, en Prof. Hein de Haas, Universiteit van Amsterdam, een duik in de migratiedynamiek toen het nog niet zo goed ging, vóór 2000, en in de booming jaren 2000-2015. Conclusie: Stijgende ontwikkelingsniveaus in Afrika zullen de komende decennia leiden tot een verdere stijging van zowel aspiratieniveaus als capaciteiten om te migreren naar Europa en (in toenemende mate) naar Azië, Amerika en Oceanië.

Ton Dietz was the director of the African Studies Centre Leiden and Professor of the Study of African Development at Leiden University from May 2010 until September 2017. Before coming to Leiden Ton Dietz was a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Amsterdam where he is still a Guest Professor.

Hein de Haas is Professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. He is a former director of the International Migration Institute at the University of Oxford. He is also Extraordinary Professor of Migration and Development at the University of Maastricht / United Nations University.
