Vacancy: Junior Researcher

Applications are invited for a Junior Researcher to work under the supervision of Dr. Akinyinka Akinyoade and Professor Chibuike Uche of the African Studies Centre (ASC), Leiden, on the Research for Inclusive Development: Productive Employment project funded by NWO/WOTRO (The Netherlands) for a period of 17 months. The project is titled “Dutch Multinational Businesses, Dutch Government and the Promotion of Productive Employment in Sub-Sahara Africa: A Comparative Study of Kenya and Nigeria”.

The ideal candidate should already have a PhD in Development Studies, Business Administration or Economics, or have submitted his/her PhD thesis prior to taking up the post. A good working knowledge in Institutional Theory, Nigeria’s Industrialization, and the use of in-depth interview research method will be an advantage. Experience in the workings of multinational businesses in Nigeria, and organization of advocacy workshops will also be useful. The post will be based in Nigeria, and the successful candidate will work in collaboration with African Heritage Institution (AHI) and Enugu Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), and is available from November 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The ideal candidate must 
a. Be prepared to carry out fieldwork (quantitative and qualitative) in the area of the case study.
b. Be prepared to apply institutional theory in the conduct of the above research.
c. Possess a basic knowledge of English.
d. Be prepared to travel to organize advocacy workshops in Nigeria.
e. Be prepared to attend and present papers at workshops (also internationally) of the programme.
f. Produce quarterly reports, in which all financial aspects and the proceedings of the research are explained, inclusive of all evidence of the costs made.
g. Be prepared to undergo periodic evaluation of the research work, including a Go-No Go evaluation after completion of the first 6 months.
h. Be responsible for complying with taxation, VAT and social security requirements associated with the remuneration which is generous.
