16:50 Panel debate on New Manipuledia
Media manipulate their audiences, always and everywhere, regardless of questions of intent and degree. New media are taking this to new heights of intensity and complexity. Pixels can be messed with and everyone’s permanently connected – and there are multiple players, whose identities and roles are increasingly ambiguous and entangled. Individual voices matter as much as those of governments, corporations, and academic and cultural institutions, and they can be hard to tell apart. A juicy selfie gone viral might just block out the evening news. Are we lost at sea? Should academics aspire to a role as navigators? If so, where do we start? Do academics matter to new media? With: Florian Schneider, Politics & Media in China (Leiden University) and Mirko Schäfer, New Media & Digital Culture (Utrecht University) and co-founder of the Utrecht Data School. Moderator: Maghiel van Crevel

17.30 Closing remarks & drinks
