Country Meeting: The Elections in Chad

For the first time in 26 years, the elections in Chad did not automatically lead to the re-election of the outgoing president Idriss Deby who has been in power since 1990. This year, fierce protest against his regime and the call for change (Front pour l'Alternance et la Concorde au Tchad (FACT)), led to the (in)formal victory of the other candidates. Although hampering the plans of Idriss Deby and his entourage, it is uncertain if this will really withhold him from gaining power again.

Which changes in Chadian society/civil society can explain this new political dynamic? And what role did the international community, especially the French, play in the process? What is the role of the war on terrorism in all of this?

Professor Mirjam de Bruijn will give a lecture on The elections in Chad: time for change?

The lecture will be followed by a French/English panel discussion. Panel members: Mirjam de Bruijn, Didier Lalaye (aka Croquemort), and Abel Ibangolo Maina.
Moderator and translator (French-English, English-French): Dorrit van Dalen.
