Country Meeting: Angola

The Angola Country Meeting will shed light on the upcoming elections in Angola and on the diplomatic and trade relations between Angola and the Netherlands.

ASCL PhD candidate Antonio Frank will give a lecture on Post-Dos Santos Angola, change or continuation?

Abstract:
President Dr Jose Eduardo dos Santos has ruled Angola since 21 September 1979. After 38 years Dr Dos Santos has decided not to run for office in the upcoming presidential election in August 2017. The current Minister of Defence Dr João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço has been elected by the Central Politburo of the MPLA as the MPLA’s candidate for the presidential election. What does this historical moment mean for the development of Angola and its citizens? How do they see a post-Dos Santos era? What kind of Angola will President Dos Santos leave behind? Who is Dr João Lourenço? What is his vision? If elected how does he plan to deal with the financial crisis in the country, unemployment and other internal dossiers? And what will this change mean for relations between Angola and the EU in particularly The Netherlands? During the country meeting, we will address this and other questions concerning the upcoming elections in Angola.

The lecture will be followed by a panel discussions. See the preliminary programme for more details.
