The African Studies Centre (ASC) and ZAM Magazine have the honour to invite you to join us in commemorating Nelson Mandela on Wednesday 11 December, 18:00-20:00. Several speakers will focus on the significance of Nelson Mandela and the roles he has played in various phases of a long liberation struggle. How does South Africa’s future look without Nelson Mandela?

18:20 Opening address by the ASC’s Director, Prof. Ton Dietz

18:30 Presentation by Dr Ineke van Kessel (ASC), the author of Mandela in een notendop: The Making of Nelson Mandela: The Construction of an Icon

18:55 A few words from Jos Damen (ASC) about the song ‘Free Nelson Mandela’

19:00 Presentation by Dr Harry Wels (ASC): 'Nelson Mandela: A Future for South Africa Based on a Legacy of Moral Leadership?'

19:25 Carina van de Walt reads her poem ‘Dorkas vir Mandela’

19:30 Panel discussion led by Bart Luirink (ZAM Magazine) and Ineke van Kessel (ASC) followed by a question and answer session

Anyone who would like to is invited to write a few words in memory of Nelson Mandela in a special book of remembrance. Alternatively, you could prepare a text in advance and bring it with you for inclusion in the book.

This evening is being jointly organized by the African Studies Centre and ZAM Magazine.
