book cover Fundamentals of Human Resource managementThe African Studies Centre publication Fundamentals of human resource management: emerging experiences from Africa (published in 2011) by Josephat Stephen Itika is the most downloaded book from Leiden Repository in 2014. Leiden Repository is the Open Access publications bank of Leiden University and affiliated institutes. The Open Access repository is a very popular database: publications from the Leiden repository were downloaded 3,2 million times in 2014, the African Studies collection saw 378,000 downloads; both figures are 25% more than in 2013.

Four out of the five most popular downloads from Leiden Repository were about an African subject: in addition to Itika’s book on human resource management (64,000 downloads, or an average of 180 per day!) is a book by Asnake Kefale Adegehe on Federalism in Ethiopia (17,861 downloads), a book by Julius-Adeoye on Nigerian theatre (12,489 downloads) and the edited volume on Boko Haram, also published by the ASC, which was downloaded 10,086 times.

The African Studies Centre firmly believes in the benefits of Open Access. That’s why the ASC was one of the first contributors to the repository of Leiden University. This repository now hosts well over 16,000 books and journal articles, of which 1,500 are publications from  the ASC.
