Summary/abstract:
Water is an important element in the social and economic development of the coastal region. This review reviews and assesses water availability, demand, present status of the water infrastructure and sustainable management of water resources in the face of a rapidly growing population, environmental deterioration and diminishing financial allocations for operation and maintenance in the sector. Both groundwater and surface water have been developed but at very high costs. The Municipality of Mombasa and the entire coastal region rely on water sources from Mzima Springs (Mount Kilimanjaro) and the Athi/Sabaki basin. The transmission lines are old and are liable to breakages, thus increasing the budget for operation and maintenance. The review raises environmental, institutional, policy and legal issues that the ministry in charge of water development needs to address in order to mitigate the looming water scarcity in the region.
