(Food and Nutrition Studies Programme, Report No.56). Nairobi/Leiden: Ministry of Planning and National Development/ African Studies Centre.

Summary/abstract:
Chronic malnutrition has been consistently high in Kilifi District, despite efforts to improve nutrition. This report presents an alternative approach to nutrition planning in Kilifi District, taking into account the multidimensional and multidisciplinary nature of nutrition. This approach is characterized by intersectoral collaboration and a participatory approach to solving nutritional problems.

The methodology has two components: Planning and Data Surveillance. The former articulates the demands for information on food security and nutrition in the district while the latter supplies information on indicators to guide decision making related to food security and nutrition. The infrastructure adapts the institutional framework that already exists so as to make it applicable to the needs of the district decision making and to improve on the current approach to nutrition planning.

Central in the operation of the infrastructure is the District Food and Nutrition Committee (DFNC) composed of the main government sectors and non-governmental organizations concerned with food and nutrition in the district. The output is in the form of Kilifi District Food and Nutrition Bulletin containing multisectoral information on socio-economic, food security, and health and nutrition indicators produced on a quarterly basis.
