Summary/abstract:
This is the second report of a series on seasonal fluctuations in food supply and nutrition in the coastal lowlands of Kenya. In the period, mid-1985 to late-1986, five consecutive survey rounds were carried out among households in six locations in Kwale and Kilifi Districts. This report presents a review of the existing literature on seasonality in Africa with focus on agriculture and the effects of seasonality on labour, nutrition and social life. Also discussed are traditional ways of preventing seasonal stress and manners to meet acute stress when ordinary measures prove insufficient. The report also summarizes the existing socio-economic knowledge about Kwale and Kilifi District such as the existing infrastructure, population characteristics, agro-ecological zones and farming systems and the characteristics of seasonality in the two districts.
