Bibliography

This bibliography covers the following subject areas: anthropology, economics, education, geography, health, history, languages, law, political science, religion and sociology. Publications from other disciplines have also been included where relevant, notably on agriculture, the arts and the environment. The Kenya Coast is defined as the region that extends roughly 150 km inland from the Indian Ocean and covers the counties of Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and the lower part of Tana River.

The first version of this bibliography was published as a chapter in the Kenya Coast Handbook and included bibliographic references up to 1996 [7]. The present digital version has been regularly updated and includes entries up to July 2019, offering 2313 titles. The first entries date from the middle of the nineteenth century and the annual number of publications has grown steadily. History and anthropology contribute the largest number of entries, followed by sociology, geography and environmental studies. A number of entries include an author's abstract or a bibliographic excerpt. The compilation of references and abstracts is ongoing and contributions from readers are welcomed. Please send comments and corrections to the editor at kenya-coast@ascleiden.nl.
