Katrien Polman

Katrien Polman1. Introduction: 'Ms Web Dossier'

The intrinsic value of any organization is largely determined by the intellect, attitude and work ethic of its staff and the African Studies Centre in Leiden is lucky to have dedicated and committed staff. Katrien Polman from the ASC’s Library, Documentation and Information Department retired in November 2014 after almost 30 years of service and to mark this occasion, the library staff made a special web dossier in her honour, based on her fields of interest.

Katrien started working at the ASC in 1986, after graduating from Leiden University and working in a couple of other jobs for a few years. She was part of the driving force behind various services that were introduced by the Library over the years: abstracts (she must have compiled well over 10,000 in her time at the ASC), web dossiers (in excess of 40, on such diverse subjects as elections, water, football, the cinema and Islam in Africa), the African Studies Thesaurus and the indexing of books and journal articles. In recognition of her dedication and enthusiasm, she even became known as Ms Web Dossier.

Katrien was always keen on innovation and developments in the information branch. The idea of web dossiers caught her imagination in 2001 as a perfect way of highlighting certain aspects of the collection. For years, she also selected publications for inclusion in Connecting-Africa, a web service developed by the ASC and that is used extensively in Africa. Her hard work did not go unnoticed and compliments flowed in for African Studies Abstracts Online from American and African universities, the thesaurus was hugely successful, the catalogue with its abundance of search terms was included in www.ilissAfrica.de and British and Swedish colleagues praised the variety of the web dossiers that Katrien produced.

Katrien may have left the ASC, but her work is still there for all to use and enjoy.

This special web dossier consists of an introduction written by Jos Damen, five title sections and a small link collection. The titles in the first four title sections are available in the ASC library and are linked directly to the corresponding record in the library’s online catalogue, which provides further details and, in many cases, an abstract.
