Sport in Africa

The NVAS (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Afrikastudies) Africa Day 2016 will take place on 15 October. This year’s theme is “Sport in Africa”. The programme focuses on the social aspects of sport and, through thematic sessions on games, empowerment, history and economics, highlights how sport is increasingly used as an instrument for positive social change.

To mark this occasion, the ASCL Library has compiled a web dossier about Sport in Africa. The dossier starts with an introduction to the subject by Dr. Victor Onyebueke, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nigeria. As an ASCL Visiting Fellow in 2015, he conducted research on the theme “Globalisation, Football and emerging urban ‘tribes’: Fans of the European Leagues in a Nigerian city”.

The web dossier contains titles from the ASCL Library catalogue published from 2010. Each title links to the corresponding record in the ASCL Library’s online catalogue, which provides abstracts and full text links (if available). The dossier concludes with links to a number of relevant websites.

Introduction

Sports encompass a diversity of physical activities, directed by simple rules, in which people compete either as individuals or groups to win prizes and/or for fun. Although sports and games have existed in rudimentary forms in almost all cultures, modern sports like football (or soccer), cricket, hockey, etc. were spread around the world by European colonial governments as part of their ‘civilising’ and ‘control’ programmes – a modernising project in which the British Empire played a very significant role. Sports can be broadly divided into three categories: team sports (e.g. football, basketball, and hockey), individual sports (athletics, cycling, golf, tennis, etc.) and combat sports (boxing, judo, taekwondo, etc.).

The globalising tendencies of sports – marked by rising global media coverage, labour specialisation, internationalisation of sports organisations and management consultancies, as well as greater professionalism and global mobility among elite athletes/footballers with the consequent advent of electronic fans – have grown in tandem with its importance for personal, societal and national development. Human sporting activities are connected with physical fitness, health, education, identity formation, as well as other personal and social development benefits that accrue both to the active participants (players and competitors) and the passive participants (spectators and fans). As a socio-cultural phenomenon, sports continues to play different and sometimes contradictory roles on the local, national and global stages as a vehicle of: resistance and protest (e.g. in pre-independent Zanzibar and more recently, in Egypt’s ‘Arab Spring’ uprising); racial division and disharmony (like in Apartheid South Africa); and political antipathy and coercion (e.g. the ban of Apartheid South Africa from the Olympic Games in 1960 and countless cases of event boycotts). That said, astounding successes have been recorded with agency for social cohesion, nation building and global peace. Today, the sports system has become a key subject of interdisciplinary research.

Football is the most popular and globalised sport in the world. Africa is no exception. The ‘beautiful game’ owes its popularity to simplicity, working-class appeal, universal and egalitarian value, and the game’s lack of selectiveness regarding equipment and facilities, physical build, and geographical features. All 54 African countries (including a non-regional member, Réunion) have functioning football leagues administered by national governing bodies under the umbrella of Confederation of African Football. African national teams and clubs in the FIFA World Cup and Club World Championship have had measured success. So far, only Morocco has reached the quarter final round in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Undoubtedly, the announcement of South Africa as the host nation of the 2010 World Cup, on 15 May 2004, opened a bright page in Africa’s global football aspiration. The euphoria of the ‘African World Cup’, which led Nelson Mandela to say he felt ‘like a young man of 15’, was felt by most if not all Africans. Consequently, politicians, bureaucrats and academics alike had to confront serious issues of mega-sports event organisation and finance as well as the task of untangling dreams from realities.

Other popular sports in Africa include basketball, athletics, cricket and rugby. While Kenya is a global player in marathons, South Africa has world renowned cricket and rugby champions. In some localities, a number of traditional sports such as Dambe boxing (Nigeria), Nguni or ‘stick fighting’ (South Africa), donkey racing (Kenya), etc. are also thriving.
