Business and entrepreneurship in Africa

In the first decade of the 21st century Africa’s image has changed dramatically, from that of the ‘hopeless continent’ to the continent of ‘lion economies’, analogous to the ‘Asian tigers’. Five of the twelve fastest growing economies in the world are African, foreign direct investment is five times what it was a decade ago, and there is an emerging African middle class. Africa offers new opportunities for its people and for those who want to invest in Africa’s future. A growing afro-optimism is replacing the afro-pessimism of the 1990s.

Africa’s potential also inspired the Dutch entrepreneurs and academics who founded the Afrika Instituut in Rotterdam in 1947. Africa, with the exception of South Africa, was a continent about which little was known in the Netherlands at the time. The Afrika Instituut was set up with the idea of changing this and of tapping into the new possibilities Africa was perceived to offer in the wake of the Second World War and the independence of the former Dutch colony of Indonesia. However, within ten years of its founding the institute split up. The scientific branch moved to Leiden and is now one of the world’s largest African Studies research and documentation centres (ASC). The business branch evolved into the Netherlands-African Business Council (NABC), with an office in The Hague and a network of more than 300 Dutch enterprises doing business in Africa.

To celebrate their 65th anniversary, the ASC and the NABC organized an international conference in Zeist on 29-30 October 2012 to bring together prominent (African) business leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, journalists and others engaged with Africa and challenge them to sharpen their perception of contemporary Africa. The conference title - 'Africa Works! 21st Century Trends' - is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 1999 publication, Africa Works, Patrick Chabal and Jean-Pascal Daloz’s controversial analysis of the workings of African politics and the continent’s failed development.

Het nieuwe Afrika, the glossy magazine jointly published by the ASC and the NABC in the run-up to the conference, also conveys the message that “Yes, Africa works!”, although not everyone appreciates the Utopian image the magazine conjures up.

To coincide with the conference and provide background information, the Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies Centre has compiled the present web dossier, based on the ASC library collection. It contains titles of literature published since 2010 on economic conditions in Africa in general, small enterprises and entrepreneurship, investments and investment policy, and commercial and company law, as well as a selection of journals providing current economic and business information and statistical data. All titles are available in the ASC Library. Each title links directly to the corresponding record in the library’s online catalogue, which provides further bibliographic details and abstracts, loan information, and links to full text if available. The dossier concludes with links to a number of relevant web sites.
