PhD
Lotje de Vries (1979) started her PhD in February 2008. Aim of the research is to unravel linkages between levels of government and governance in the semi-autonomous territory of Southern Sudan from its capital in Juba to the border with Uganda and DR Congo. In border areas, state power becomes intertwined with locally grounded and informal political realities. By means of ethnographic fieldwork in villages along the border, she seeks to understand why and how borders provide opportunities for some and hindrances to others. Focusing on the frontiers, the research contributes to the understanding of the 'state building' process in daily reality in the semi-autonomous Southern Sudan. The project is part of the IS Academy partnership between the African Studies Centre and the Africa Department of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Lotje studied Development Sociology at Wageningen University. Prior to the PhD, she worked for the Senegalese NGO Enda Diapol on regional fisheries policies, small scale fisheries, and regional integration and cross-border cooperation. She contributed to several consultancy assignments and research projects in the same fields. |
