This bibliography has been prepared in conjunction with the African Studies
Centre/Centre d’Etude d’Afrique Noire project “Islam, the Disengagement of the
State, and Globalization in Sub-Saharan Africa”, that was funded by the
Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which resulted in a Conference held in
the UNESCO building in Paris on 12 and 13 May 2005.
The bibliography contains over 4,300 references to secondary literature in
European languages about Islam in contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa, that is from
around 1960 to 2005. Many of the entries also have abstracts, which the ASC
library staff has produced. Some of the other entries have abstracts from the
authors, publishers, and journals themselves.
The following sources were consulted for this bibliography:
- Library catalogues, including those of the African Studies Centre,
Northwestern University, and the US Library of Congress;
- Various published bibliographies, that deal with both Islamic and
regional studies (among these the Index Islamicus);
- Literature references in a large number of recent publications on Islam in
Africa.
In addition, many researchers responded to a call for references, that was
announced on H-net Africa and through various email lists.
