The twenty-first century presents a hostile face to millions of
children and youth in many African countries. An increasing number of
children are suffering from war, poverty, abuse, human-rights violations
and the effects of AIDS. African youth, while forming a numerical
majority, often feel excluded from power and are marginalized in
socio-economic terms. The conflict between generations and age groups is
a phenomenon of enduring concern in many parts of the continent. In
neopatrimonial countries in particular, emerging generations are often
confronted with 'blocked mobility' and are therefore excluded from
employment and access to political power. The issue of blocked mobility
forms the background to the rise of various opposition groups and
resistance movements among youth in Africa.
The international conference on "Youth and the Politics of
Generational Conflict in Africa" in Leiden on 24 and 25 April 2003
addresses issues of youth, politics and conflict in Africa in a
comparative perspective. The Library, Documentation and Information
Department of the ASC has compiled this dossier on Youth in Africa to
coincide with the conference. The dossier contains a selection of titles
from the library's online catalogue, as well as selected web resources
on youth in Africa. It covers monographs, articles and chapters from
edited works published in the last five years (1998-2003), which are
arranged as follows: Youth and War; Youth and Politics; Generations;
Street Children; Youth (general). Within each section, titles are
arranged by year of publication and within each year, alphabetically by
author. Each title links directly with the corresponding record in the
online
catalogue,
which provides a more detailed description of all titles as well as
abstracts of articles and edited works.
